Filipino Head Coach

11 12 2009

Filipino athletes in pro sports are very rare, and even more rare are Filipino head coaches. But the Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra broke grounds before the first Filipino-American NBA head coach. Erik Spoelstra was the successor to Coach Pat Riley. Pat Riley believed that Spoelsta will be a successful head coach saying, “his game is now about younger coaches who are technologically skilled, innovative and bring fresh new ideas. That’s what we feel we are getting with Erik Spoelstra. He’s a man that was born to coach.” Spoelstra was also a basketball star back in his high school and college days. He attended University of Portland where he was named WCC Freshmen of the year. The Miami heat under the Spoelstra have elevated their play into being one the top teams in the Eastern Conference. In his first year as head coach, Spoelstra helped the Heat to a 43 win record in the 08-09 season, a record that was the best single season turn around, of course it did help that Dwayne Wade was healthy and playing like an All-Star. Not only did Spoelstra helped the Heat turn around a losing season to a winning season in just one year, he also helped D-Wade become the scorer that he is today by helping him develop his jumper.
