Friendship Games 2009

10 11 2009

For the first time on October 24th, I attended friendship games. Friendship Games however, is definitely not a new event. It has been running annually since 1985, and hosted by various colleges in southern California. Every year, a different Pilipino American Student Association or PASA will host the event at their campus, where over 50 universities and colleges from across the nation will participate. Over 7,000 students show up, and are able to celebrate what is called “SPUF” or (Spirit Pride Unity and Friendship.) For 24 years now, colleges across the nation have been competing for the “FG TROPHY”

Now Friendship Games has definitely turned into an event full of traditions. First of all, there are the themes. Each team that shows up from a different school are expected to come prepared with a different theme. Some example are SF State’s “HELLA LUMPIA,” or UC Merced’s “Scrub” theme. Having the best and most played out theme is definitely part of the spirit competition during the day. The day begins with chants and spirit songs that each school makes up for that year which each school goes around greeting each other. Then, there is what is called “role call” where every school will go up on stage and give a small performance to the rest of the schools. This is also very competitive in how creative and spirited the schools are.  There are two possible ways to win at Friendship Games, which are to win for spirit, or to win just from the games. The list of games includes :

1.    The “Nasty”

2.    Conveyor Belt

3.    Tidal Wave

4.    Alpine Green

5.    Big Groundhog

6.    Final Rampage

There is also a Friendship Games half time show that lets Pilipino entertainers showcase their talents during the middle of the day. This year at CSU Fullerton, the halftime show included:

AJ RAFAEL

AJ & REESE

KABA MODERN

KRYSTLE CRUZ

LYDIA PAEK

MARLON D

MIKE ISBERTO

PAC MODERN

TEAM MILLENNIA

TM TOTS

CSUF’S THETA DELTA BETA

Finally, there is the Friendship Games after party at some other designated location during the night. This is always exciting because at the end of the night, the winners are announced and the GIANT FG trophies are given to the winners. Overall, Friendship Games is a really fun way to celebrate Filipino heritage and just bring Filipinos together for one crazy day to reunite and share identity.
