The Phenomenon That Is Filipino Heritage Night

18 10 2009

Before I get into my topic, I just wanna say it’s really great to see everyone putting their time and energy into the relief for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy and Parma. Seeing great awareness on our campus (I’ve been seeing lots of tables for donations plus all my friends talk about it too) really says something about the character of the students we have at our school. Anyways, if you haven’t donated or helped out yet, please do because our homeland definitely needs all the love and support they can get, and your help can definitely make a difference.

With that said, I really wanted to talk about a recent phenomenon that has been taking place in the bay area as of late, mostly in professional sports: the rise of the Filipino Heritage Night. For those of who have never been, you’re probably asking either out loud or in your head, “What is Filipino Heritage Night?” Basically, it’s when a sports organization such as the San Francisco Giants or the Golden State Warriors dedicates one of their home games to celebrate Filipino culture. During before and/or halftime, they have live appearances and performances from those involved in both the local and national Filipino scene.

According to Tom McDonald, the Giants senior vice president of consumer marketing, Filipino Heritage Night has been a huge success for the Giants: “We are extremely grateful for this relationship between the Giants and the Filipino community. This heritage event has grown to be one of the largest programs of its kind, bringing together a celebration of athletics, community and culture.”

Lately, whenever the Giants hold their Filipino Heritage Nights, they usually have none other than the Pac-Man himself Manny Pacquiao make an appearance and throw out the first pitch. This year, both the Golden State Warriors and the Oakland Raiders are both having their 2nd annual Filipino Heritage Nights. But what’s even more interesting is that during the Warrior’s Filipino night, they are actually having the current lead singer of Journey, Arnel Pineda, make an appearance as well as a Q and A session (he might even throw in a song, you never know). So if you guys aren’t doing anything these following dates, you guys should totally go and have fun!

Upcoming dates for Filipino Heritage Night:

Oakland Raiders: Oct 18th, 2009

Golden State Warriors: Nov 6th, 2009

Hopefully see you guys there!
